my foot

I hadn’t skated my regular 28 miles for three weeks because of a combination of foot/skate problems and a week of rain.  And somewhere in the process I lost one of my EzeeFit booties.  So here is what my foot looks like after 28 miles without the EzeeFits.  You can’t see it here, but there’s a big blister on the left side of my ankle too.  I’m ordering a new pair of EzeeFits as soon as I finish this post.

What I really need is a new pair of boots (Hello Bont!  Are you listening?)

Only 21 miles yesterday because my ankle bones are rubbing a lot  – like a lot – and I was afraid I’d mess up my feet.  I’m going to hold off on skating again until at least the weekend, and try heat-molding a better ankle pocket.

I moved the frame on my right skate in 3 or 4 mm and my left one 1 or 2.  This is “all the way in” on both of them.  I think it’s working better, but need to fix the ankle pocket and give my feet a break so I can tell for sure.

June 10, 2009

So 9:30ish this evening (I’m guessing, I didn’t look at the time), I’m putting on my skates at the AA Arena end of Katy trail.  There is an ABC camera truck there to get footage for a story about Texas’ “buffer zone” law mandating a 3 foot buffer zone for bikers and skaters.  And along come 15 or so skaters, moving relatively quickly.

“I gotta get me some of that”, I thought, and laced my second skate up to chase them down.  It turned out to be an easy chase; they were stopped at a water fountain waiting for stragglers to catch up.  They were the Pegasus Flyers Tuesday night group, along with a couple of the Texas Flyers guys (who lived up to their name and flew right past me).  I skated with them down to Knox street on the trail and then up (Cole?) to the Albertsons parking lot where they start and end their skate.  They said it’s about 11 miles and they start at 8.  All seemed like a bunch of nice folks and I think I’ll try to do the whole skate with them next week.

I didn’t skate at all last weekend, btw.  I was at a Mike Barber Ministries event at Hilltop women’s prison in Gatesville Thursday/Friday/Saturday, and my niece Valerie graduated after church on Sunday.

My weight was 171.4 after my skate tonight (probably a bit dehydrated).  That means when I lose another 3 and a half pounds I’ll officially not be overweight on the BMI chart for the first time in my adult life!  I’m slightly excited.

My goal for the summer is 165 lbs / 75 kg, but I can still reach down and grab more than 6 lbs of flab I’d like to go away, so maybe I won’t be content until 160 or so.  Still, I’m moving the right direction and getting closer and closer!  Once I get to my target I’m going to be ruthless with my diet and exercise so I can stabilize at that weight.  I don’t pretend to understand how that works, but it seems like we all live with a weight equilibrium of what our bodies “expect” us to be.  I want to convince my body that the new me is about 160 lbs!

June 3, 2009

I knew I’d been flaky about updating this, but i’d forgotten how long it had been!

Almost all the skating I’ve been doing has been at Katy Trail.  Whenever I’m in Dallas on the way back from something I try and stop by for a skate.  Because I’ve been lightly employed for several months I’ve avoided making the 50 mile drive (round trip) just for a skate though.

One recent bonus is that I found out a friend of mine, Anthony Corder, used to be an avid quads skater.  How avid?  His girlfriend in Jr. High was Deb Rice.  Deb Rice the Bont Rep., the winner of multiple marathons, the holder of the women’s downhill speed record, the roller derby queen.  That Deb Rice.

Anthony hadn’t skated for a couple years.  Last Tuesday he was praying, saying: “God, I’d really like to skate to get back in shape, but I need a friend to skate with.”  So that night (that night!) he text’d me to ask if I wanted to join them for a late dinner.  When I got there I excused myself for being slightly sweaty since I’d just finished skating.   His jaw litterally dropped open.  “You mean, like, inline skating?”  “Yeah”, I said.  “I’m definitely not a skateboarder”

So about 2 am that night we did our first lap of Katy Trail, and another one the next Saturday.  He contacted his old friend Debbie to see if she can work him a deal on some skates.  I told him if Deb works any “deals” that he shouldn’t forget his buddy Marty who really could use a new pair of Bont boots.

In other news, I’m very actively trying to lose weight.  I got down to around 175 lbs / 79 kg last summer, but back up to 185 (my normal weight since high school) when I stopped skating for the winter.  This time I’m using a combination of diet and exercise and I’m going to be more concientious about keeping it off.  My target for this summer is 165 lbs / 75 kb, which will put me just within the “normal” range on the BMI (body mass index) charts.  I’m also going to be agressive about keeping it off in the fall and winter when I’m typically less active.  Once I’ve kept it off for 90 days or so I’ll re-evaluate any additional weight adjustment.  I’ll go into my diet another day.  You’ll probably think it’s weird, but it’s working so far for me.

I’m guessing a little here on my YTD distance since I haven’t kept super-good records.  If anything I suspect it’s slightly low.

skatelog: rewind

February 10, 2009

without a doubt, i did a skatelog on the 1st or 2nd of february about skating on january 31st.  i wrote it, published it, looked at it, and made a few edits.  and yet, wordpress seems to have misplaced it completely – i can’t find any sign of it!

so, anyway, i skated 28miles /45km on the 31st, and then 21 miles / 34km  last friday evening on katy trail.  i’d have skated longer friday night but the wind was picking up (35 mph / 56 kph gusts) and sections of lights were out.  they’re theoretically on until 11:00 (or is it midnight?) but they started going out before 10:00.

it has continued to be windy, with a little rain this morning.  but i’ll probably get out in the next day or two.

January 1, 2009

winter weather isn’t too predictable in texas and today, new years, we had a beautiful 65 degree day.  there was a little breeze just before sunset, but most of the afternoon was calm, sunny, and beautiful.

i should’ve gone out about 1:00, but i procrastinated until 3:00, then got to the american airlines lot where i usually park and there was some sort of event going on.

so i started late – after 4:00 once i worked out parking – and only got in 21 miles, but it was still a great way to start off the year!  saturday is predicted to be even warmer (ok, so is tomorrow, but i have to work).   i saw steven novak one time, but we going opposite directions about the mid-point of the trail  and i didn’t see him again.  probably he went down turtle creek blvd. instead of back up katy trail.  i was NOT skating very fast (i didn’t even bring a watch) so i’d have had a time keeping up with him anyway.

i ripped a tiny chunk of skin, callus really, off my right ankle but that was my only injury.  skating without lacing the top eyelet is totally working for the place in front of my ankle that was getting hurt last fall.  no pain there at all today.  i went ahead and bent the tongues forward too.  this seemed to help with the ankle but had the negative side effect of making the skates looser around the ankle.  gotta order those new skates.  i wonder if bont will cut them lower for me if i ask?

ho ho ho

December 28, 2008

i’ve been storing extra body fat to keep me warm through the winter.  now it seems it may be a mild one, so i’m keen to drop a few lbs/kg.

ok, i made up the “to keep me warm” part.  actually i’ve laid off skating for about 6 weeks to allow my ankle to heal up.  it is substantially better, but still not quite right.  (i suppose i should go to a doctor.)  but i have put on some weight!

we had heavy but brief thunderstorms this morning.  my electricity went out twice, just for a moment each time.  after that a strong dry wind started up, drying the pavement in only an hour.  it was around 60F/15C and sunny so, in spite of the wind and my ankle,  i drove in to katy trail.  i considered harry meyers park in rockwall but it’s quite exposed to the wind and gets a lot of mud across the trail after a rain.

i didn’t skate too long, maybe 15 or so miles, but did make a new friend.  steven novak used to live in rockwall (where i live) and now lives just a mile or so east of katy trail.  he’s an artist and photographer (you’ll notice from his site) and also a pretty good skater.  he said he used to skate aggressive – he told me that as he was leading me down a bunch of steps – but now mostly skates katy and some surrounding streets.  he said he skates most days, and it showed.  he gave me a run for my money!

in hopes of not messing up my ankle further, i didn’t lace the top eyelet of my skates.  it seemed to help a bit, but i’m feeling my right ankle again as i write this, so it’s not a perfect solution.  in january i plan to order that new (custom) pair of bont apache boots.

skatelog: 2008-07-31 – splat!

August 2, 2008

busy-ness kept me from skating monday or tuesday.  wednesday i had my skates on an was ready to go when a thunderstorm started.  thursday was glorious!  for about two weeks i’ve been working at beal bank in plano texas so i’ve been skating on trails there after work.

plano has invested heavily in a very well-developed system of paved off-street trails.  their policy statement (pdf) on bicycle traffic could be used as a model for a lot of towns, btw.  the “bluebonnet trail” runs east-west under main electric power lines.  older sections are 6 feet wide and newer ones are 8.  there are various places where north-south trails cross it, especially the “preston ridge trail” and the “chisolm trail”.  they’re intended for bicycle comuting, as well as recreational use.  the only major down side is street crossings.  most places the cycle trails cross a street there isn’t even a crosswalk marked.  in the places where they’re marked and signed, motorists routinely ignor them.  on many sections of the trails i skate for a quarter mile, then wait for traffic for a minute.  then cross the street and do it again.  quite annoying.

i’ve been starting on the preston ridge trail at legacy.  i go south to catch the bluebonnet trail, then east until just past the plano dog park.  then i take the chisolm trail southeast to 15th street, coming out at 15th and central right behind an “on the border” restaurant.  it’s only 13.25 miles there and back, but takes me about an hour and 10 because of the many stops (i should count the stops next time).

the paving varies a lot along the way.  some places are good, some are rough or irregular.  most have sidewalk-style expansion grooves every 6 or 8 feet.  many of the on-off ramps for street crossings have bumps that bicycles will barely feel, but which could kill a skater.  the chisolm trail section is the best about going under the streets since it follows a creek so they needed bridges anyway.

the very smoothest, flattest section of concrete is the L-shaped ball park parking lot east of the plano recreation center.  the expansion grooves are small and are spaced like normal street paving.  it’s about a half-mile of pure bliss.

usually it is.

thursday, i was on the return side of my first lap and was cruising.  it was just after 7:00 in the evening and had started to cool down.  i was taking those long, hard pushes that seem so powerful on the smooth flat concrete.  i felt great!  i was going two laps for sure and was considering three if i had enough sunlight.  i’d just turned north and was skating parallel beside the rec center.  my left foot was under me on the outside edge of a double-push.

and SPLAT!

there was a place at an expansion joint that the paving had started to fail.  the color of paving is different on the two sides, so probably the crew that laid the road had left off one day and started the next.  there’s an 18 inch semicircle on one side where the concrete has collapsed by about an inch and a half.  if i’d been watching at all, instead of daydreaming about how good i felt, i’d have skated just to the side of it with no problem.

as it was, my left foot caught that inch and a half ledge and i went down immediately.  no time for thought like the slow-motion memories of a car wreck.  this was sub-second, from probably 20 miles an hour to zero.

i strawberried my left leg, caught just a tiny bit of my right elbow, hit hard enough on my chest to knock the wind out of me, and (most noticably) caught the bottom of my chin.  the blood from my chin mixed with sweat and dripped right down my neck and the center of my chest to my belly button.

a parks department employee was following me in his pickup and stopped to offer some starbucks napkins for the bleeding.  he kept asking if i was ok and i kept telling him i didn’t know.  i was in shock and was trying to catch my breath from the chest-slam so it took a bit before i could inventory for anything broken.  after a few minutes i decided i would live and thanked the parks department guy and a walker who’d stopped to help.

i skated back to the trucklet and checked my chin in the rear-view mirror.  the bleeding had slowed to an ooze.   i thought about getting in a hot vehicle, sore everywhere and covered in sweat, and driving home.  i thought about how few miles i had this week.  i checked my skates – i’d lost some leather on both, especially the outside toe edge of the left one, but the frames were still firm.

…so i did another lap

why i skate

May 15, 2008

it was rainy all day today and yesterday too.  while i’m thinking about it skating instead of doing it, i thought i’d share what’s on my mind.

i was never really an athletic guy.  i’ve worn glasses for astigmatism since i was 4 and didn’t have the depth perception for ball-related sports.  my dad was a geek before me, so he never pushed me much toward them either.

by “not athletic”, i mean in any competitive sense.  i’ve always been very active.  i used to swim, bike, run, and throw a mean frisbee.  running was my aerobic exercise of choice for quite a while.  i was dog-slow, but tenacious.  i did it because i work sitting behind a computer and i knew my body needed the exercise.

then i saw someone on rollerblades.  this was about 1991 and i was pretty much hooked at first site.  i bought a pair as soon as i could and have been skating ever since.  i usually put on miles in the late afternoon in the spring, early morning during the summer, and then give it up for the winter.  i still bike occasionally, but skating has, by far, become my major exercise.

part of this is because of my dad.  he was a runner.  when he was in his 40’s he started running several marathons a year, and he’d do 5 or 8 miles 3 times a week, longer on a saturday morning, for training.  i say he was a runner because he can’t run now.  he’s 80 and still in good health, but his knees are shot from pounding all that pavement.

skating is a lot easier on your knees (ok, unless you fall), and better full-body exercise than running too.  besides that, it’s fun!  back when i ran i had to make myself do it.  yes, there’s an endorphine rush after i’d run for a little, but it was never something i looked forward to.

skating, on the other hand, i love. i like skating with my kids.  i like chasing cyclists on the exercise trails.  i like skating just fine all by myself too.  i pray, think deep thoughts, concentrate on skating technique, or zone out and hardly think at all.  i like skating around the neighborhood and on trails and i really enjoy exploring places to skate in a new city while traveling.

so, that’s why
